Ideational Factors in Turkey’s Alignment with Qatar and Their Impact on Regional Security

Turkey and Qatar have developed exceptionally cordial relations aligned their foreign policies on many regional issues. In the 2017 Gulf crisis, despite risk of incurring material losses sacrificing with blockading countries, quickly came to support alleviating Doha’s physical political isolation. This highlights how ideational elements norms play a crucial role in Turkey’s policy towards Qatar, wider implications for security intra-Sunni disputes. The dimensions are especially evident when looking at Turkish national conceptions as reflected Ankara’s official discourse under rule Justice Development Party (AKP).
